This piece was composed for the RWCMD’s Leary Quintet, a brand-new flute & string quartet ensemble based in South Wales. It was composed in collaboration with the group, with each part written for the individual players’ styles. For this piece in particular, an additional cello is required, a set-up borrowed from Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major (often referred to as his Cello Quintet), which provides a rich, often soloistic low end. The piece follows a Theme & Variation structure, with the first idea stated in the first violin in the first ten bars. The initial theme is then subjected to several augmentations, diminutions and fragmentations, before culminating in the exciting Tarantella that increases in tempo toward a final explosive flourish.
